Central Receiving Center (CRC)

The Central Receiving Center has been a single point of entry for mental health and substance use disorders since its opening in 2003, and has served almost 11,000 clients through June 2006. Through collaborative community efforts, the CRC has provided the first integrated, comprehensive acute crisis assessment system in the State of Florida. Due to the efforts of Mayor Richard T. Crotty and the Board of County Commissioners, funding was received from Orange County in the amount of $1.2 million. Additional funding was also received from the State of Florida Department of Children & Families, Florida Hospital and Orlando Regional Healthcare.
CRC and Law Enforcement

The CRC accepts crisis mental health and substance abuse consumers in need of acute care services in our community. The CRC has become a central point of access for law enforcement, allowing them to divert individuals who might otherwise be taken to jail or an emergency department. Having one central point of access for crisis assessment now allows our community to make decisions for needed services based on accurate data. The providers of services for the CRC include Lakeside Alternatives and The Center for Drug-Free Living, with the administration and operational oversight provided by Human Services Associates. The CRC is located at Lakeside Alternatives' Princeton Plaza, also known as the old Princeton Hospital, at 1800 Mercy Drive in Orlando.

Individuals experiencing a crisis due to mental health and/or substance use disorders and who come in contact with law enforcement, are brought to the CRC. While law enforcement officers praise the CRC for its ease of use, the facility has also reduced law enforcement costs by having officers in and out of the facility within 10 minutes on average, furthering public safety.

Goals and the Future
horizontalbar

The CRC offers a safe and dignified environment for individuals in crisis, while providing timely assessments and interventions. Clients are referred to the least restrictive, but most effective, levels of care to compliment their treatment goals. The CRC tracks the statistical data and movement of clients within the system of care in hopes of diverting these individuals from the jail and/or local emergency departments.

Through successful partnerships and ongoing efforts, the CRC will continue to work toward the goal of integrating services within our community. Funding inequities and a lack of resources are issues the CRC Governing Board continues to address with the State of Florida in order to make the best decisions for consumers suffering from mental illness and/or substance use disorders.
