Overview

The Children's Safety Village of Central Florida is a unique educational facility where children encounter safety hazards similar to those found in everyday life. Uniformed fire and law enforcement safety experts teach children how to practice safety through hands-on exercises, role-playing activities, and other exciting participatory techniques.

The Orange County Fire Rescue in cooperation with the Orlando Fire Department provides full time instructors to the Fire Safety House located at the Children's Safety Village. Fire safety education and injury prevention programs are presented to audiences of all ages. They are designed to educate, reinforce safety behavior and to reduce the number of injuries and deaths related to fire.

This program exists in many different forms in our community. For example, "Risk Watch" is a National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) program for Kindergarteners to Eight-Graders. It is a modular program that covers many areas of safety, including fire safety. In 1999, twelve elementary schools from Pre-K through fifth grade used this program as a pilot. After completing a modular nine-week program, the students must pass a final exam. After completion of the program, students are taken to the Orange County Children's Safety Village where the information learned in the classroom setting is now reinforced by role playing and demonstrations. OCFRD partners with Safe Kids of Greater Orlando and Arnold Palmer Hospital to sponsor this program.
