Welcome to the International Drive Preliminary Engineering Study web site. The project limits are from Westwood Blvd to Westwood Blvd. The project is located in the heart of the tourist district in Commission District 1. Also, the project lies within the boundary of the International Drive Community Redevelopment Area (CRA).
The Preliminary Engineering Study will evaluate the widening of International Drive from four lanes to six lanes with additional turn lanes and sidewalks. In addition, the study will assess drainage requirements, existing and future traffic volumes, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, lighting, and safety improvements.
The study is anticipated to take 6 months to complete and will have a public involvement meeting along with separate outreach meetings to gather public input especially from the businesses along the corridor. The study was presented to the Orange County Local Planning Agency (LPA) at a work session in March and a public hearing on April 16, 2009. The LPA's role is to find the project consistent with Orange County Comprehensive Policy Plan. The LPA voted unanimously in favor of the project. The project will now be presented to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) on June 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. for their approval.
Upon approval from the BCC, the International Drive project will proceed to final design and then to construction. The original project was designed for 6 lanes and it is anticipated that no additional right-of-way will be required. The final design process will take approximately 12 months to complete followed by 18 to 24 months for construction.
