Help Stop Dogfighting
Dogfighting is a Felony
horizontalbar

Animal Services has partnered with the Orange County Sherriff's Office on a new campaign that encourages citizens to take action to stop dogfighting in Orange County. Participating in any dogfighting activities—including watching a dogfight—is a felony. The so-called "bloodsport" causes immeasurable suffering to the animals who are subjected to it and often goes hand-in-hand with illegal activities such as drugs, weapons and other criminal activities.

Animal Services is offering several phone numbers for citizens to report suspected dogfighting activities, including an anonymous tip line:

  • Dial 800-423-TIPS (anonymous tips)
  • Dial 3-1-1 (immediate access to Animal Services' dispatch)
  • Dial 9-1-1 (for dogfights in progress)

Help Orange County protect animals in our community and end this atrocious crime.

Raising Awareness, Ending Cruelty
horizontalbar

Animal Services has run advertisements in community newspapers that highlight how citizens can report dogfighting. Ads are targeted at communities where known or suspected dogfights have occurred. Additional efforts are aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of dogfighting, the animal suffering it entails and what citizens should look for to identify dogfighting activities in their communities.

A major effort of the campaign includes asking citizens to call in tips.

"We understand that reporting neighbors involved in criminal activities like dogfighting can be scary, so we made sure we had an anonymous tip line available for Orange County citizens," said Vanessa Bouffard, marketing and public relations program coordinator for Animal Services.

You can help end dogfighting in Orange County. Call us today if you suspect any dogfighting activities are occurring near you.

How to Spot Dogfighting
horizontalbar

Not sure what to look for to spot potential dogfighting? Below are signs that may indicate dogfighting is happening in your neighborhood:

  • A large number of pit bulls being kept in one location, especially multiple dogs who are chained or kenneled and seem unsocialized.
  • Dogs with scars on their faces, front legs and stifle area (hind end and thighs).
  • Dogfighting training equipment, such as:
    • treadmills used to build dogs' endurance
    • "break sticks" used to pry apart the jaws of dogs locked in battle
    • tires or "springpoles" (usually a large spring with rope attached to either end) hanging from tree limbs
  • Unusual foot traffic coming and going from a location at odd hours.

If you see any of these signs of dogfighting in your community, please contact Animal Services or the Sherriff's Office immediately at any of the numbers listed above.
