Census 2010

Marketing
Orange County Neighborhood Services is tasked with marketing Census 2010 in Orange County, in an effort to promote local participation.

Every 10 years, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution, our nation conducts a census — an effort to count every person living in the United States.  This multibillion-dollar operation requires years of planning and more than a half million temporary workers.  The key to this endeavor is having every household fill out and mail back a completed census form.  Participation is critical, as the results determine how Congress is apportioned and how more than $300 billion in federal funds are distributed annually to state, local and tribal areas.

Census Workers in Your Neighborhood
As a good neighbor you should always be on the look out for strangers in the neighborhood!  But don’t be alarmed if you have seen some folks walking door-to-door with a handheld computer checking addresses in your neighborhood…it might just be a census worker verifying your neighborhood addresses.  If you do see these folks, say hi and ask what they’re up to…

The Census Bureau launched their massive address canvassing operation on March 30, 2009, to verify and update Orange County addresses; this phase of the census process should conclude by mid July 2009.  Census workers can be identified by the official Census Bureau badge they carry.  During the address canvassing operation, census workers may ask to verify a housing structure’s address and whether there are additional living quarters on the property.  The workers will never ask for bank or social security information.  All census information collected, including addresses, are confidential and protected by law.  Should you see any impostors please notify the police.

The 2010 Census is on the horizon and the U.S. Census Bureau wants to ensure that everyone is counted.  We are developing partnerships with state, local, and tribal governments; community-based organizations; faith-based groups; schools; businesses; the media; and others.  Through these collaborative relationships, we can reach our shared goal of counting all residents in the 2010 Census.  By being informed about the census and better understanding the census process, residents are more likely to respond to the census questionnaire.

Complete Count Committee Program
horizontalbar

The Complete Count Committee (CCC) Program is key to making this happen in communities all across the country.  CCC's incorporate local knowledge, influence and possible resources to educate residents and promote the census through a locally-based and targeted outreach and promotion effort.  CCC's provide a vehicle for coordinating and nurturing a cooperative effort between local governments, communities, and the U.S. Census Bureau. Local governments and community organizations can help the Census Bureau get a complete count in 2010.

Orange County's Complete Count Committee will be responsible for marketing and outreach to encourage population to complete census forms.  The committee is composed of members that are citizens, agencies, organizations, religious groups, and ethnic groups.  Subcommittees include: ethnic, religious, media, or others as designated by the local governments.
