Introduction

Innovation Way

In his 2005 State of the County address, Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty revealed a new strategy for Southeast Orange County. Calling this region "Innovation Way," the Mayor plans to create a corridor linking the University of Central Florida to the Orlando International Airport.

The northern half of this area already contains high-quality residential communities, academic institutions, and commercial developments. However, the southern portion of Innovation Way is largely undeveloped.

Mayor Crotty, Commissioner Linda Stewart, the University of Central Florida, the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, and other important partners in the Innovation Way project hope to retain and enhance high-value jobs and businesses into this region's economy, which will help Orange County continue to lead Central Florida into the 21st century.

Planning Process

Planning Process

The Planning for Innovation Way to date has included several components, each of which are described in more detail below:

Visioning
horizontalbar

Two Visioning Workshops were conducted in the Innovation Way area with the community on July 18, 2005, and August 13, 2005. These interactive workshops used facilitated hands-on exercises with local residents, property owners, and business owners in small groups.

Using innovative public participation tools that provided immediate feedback, all participants' comments were compiled and summarized to form a series of vision statements. The community vision statements for Innovation Way guided the Innovation Way Study and framework policies.

Community Planning Collaborative

Community Planning Collaborative (CPC) was an initiative among Orange County, decision support tool providers, national experts in democracy and planning, and community members to ensure the integration of good information, comprehensive analysis, and strong civic engagement in planning projects.

CPC used Innovation Way to demonstrate the capabilities of decision support tools in public participation and planning.

The Public participated in two events held as part of Community Planning Collaborative: Democracy and Planning in Action, a national conference.

Innovation Way Study

study

Orange County hired a consultant to perform a comprehensive study to establish policies to balance environmental resource protection with opportunities for sustainable economic development. Officially called the "Avalon South Economic Development and Resource Management Study", the Study Area is a major part of the larger Innovation Way corridor.
