Meeting

Created October 1995 by the Board of County Commissioners to provide citizen input to the BCC regarding related life and living conditions affecting those in the disability community. Input can include:

  • A complaint lodged by a disabled person
  • A problem associated with accessing public services or an accommodation
  • Recommending priority funding needs of those living with disabilities
  • Identifying areas for collaboration and partnership between government and private business
  • Developing awareness of the abilities of citizens with disabilities to seek employment and community volunteerism

In order to promote unbiased objectivity in the performance of their duties, members of the Board are not persons who are paid professionals or staff members affiliated with companies or agencies providing services to the disabled. Appointments to the Board reflect a representation from citizens affected by a diversity of disabilities. The board consists of seven members each appointed by a district commissioner and the county mayor. The Disability Advisory Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 11:00am.

One of the achievements of the Disability Advisory Board has been the putting together of a community Resource Guide of information identifying supporting agencies who can provide human services needed by persons with disabilities.  See ADA Resource Guide.
