Office & Commission on Aging
Office of Aging logo

The Office on Aging, located within the Health & Family Services Department, provides staff support to the Commission on Aging. The Commission on Aging is not a provider or funder of senior services. It identifies Orange County resources dedicated to older adults and works with local, state and national partners to create an elder-friendly community. By promoting partnerships with organizations, identifying needed programs, and linking services to the citizens, the Commission's goal is to empower older adults to maintain their independence and quality of life within their home community.

The Commission on Aging is an advisory board to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners. The fifteen board members are appointed to represent different industries that are tied to the lives of older adults including healthcare, transportation, and faith communities. The Commission on Aging meets bi-monthly on the second Monday, starting in January.  The Commission is supported by a Community Partnerships Committee that is comprised of the agencies providing services to seniors and their families.

Orange County Government's Office on Aging is partnering with a number of nonprofit agencies to host the 2009 Annual Senior Expo on May 6-7 at the Central Florida Fairgrounds, 10 am – 4 pm.  The Senior Expo provides up-to-date information about senior services in one location so that residents have the opportunity to increase their understanding about current programs for older adults and their caregivers. The free Senior Expo includes parking, health screenings, entertainment, door prizes and information about state, federal and local nonprofit agencies.  Over 100 vendors will be participating and more than 3,000 people are expected to visit the two-day Expo. As part of the entertainment and presentations offered throughout the day, Orange County Government will present from noon to 1 pm an overview of services for senior citizens that are offered through their departments.

Also included at this event is the May 6th CarFit "examination," which helps older adult drivers become more aware of minor adjustments they can make in order to give them full advantage as a safe and conscientious driver.  This innovative national program is designed to give a quick comprehensive check on how well a senior driver and their vehicle work together.  CarFit also provides the motorists with community traffic safety resources to help keep them driving safely longer.
