Training & Technical Research

The Training Section is responsible for the continuing education of all fire inspectors on a daily basis to ensure that Inspectors are up to date on all new and existing fire codes. The Section routinely holds monthly training classes where all inspectors attend and which the Florida State Fire College recognizes the classes for inspector re-certification. The Section trains newly hired inspectors as well as provides remedial training for existing inspectors. The OFM training room received a major component upgrade in 2005 to improve the audio and visual quality of the presentation and training sessions. The Training Section encourages local contractors to volunteer and provide further training of our inspectors in all new fire protection technologies.

The Section is also responsible for long-term and short-term planning to determine where inspection resources may be needed in the future. With the explosive population and construction growth in Orange County, this Section continually modifies procedures to ensure that the Office of the Fire Marshal is properly prepared to handle inspection responsibilities in the present and future. The Section has introduced tablet personal computers to inspectors in the field to simplify and streamline the inspection process. The new computers will allow inspectors to inspect without the use of paper while also storing a database of all Orange County buildings as well as various fire codes.

The Section is also responsible for the Nuisance Fire Alarm Program which encourages customers to repair fire alarms which are continually malfunctioning and where Orange County Fire Rescue units have to respond where there is no emergency. The goal of the Section is to have these systems repaired so rescue units are available for real emergencies.
