The Orange County Fire Rescue Department (OCFRD) Reserve Program is a non-paid volunteer program. The program is designed for individuals interested in providing community services that reduce property loss caused by fire, hazardous situations, injuries, deaths, and other emergencies. Reserve firefighters provide essential functions that assist the department and the residents of Orange County. Reserve personnel participate in training classes, community events, department drills, and competitions.
The reserve program consists of two types of reserves personnel: (1) "Certified Reserve" (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health-IDLH qualified), and (2) "Staff Reserve" (Non-IDLH qualified) personnel. Certified Reserve Firefighters may ride on combat ready vehicles with the OCFRD crew and are expected to meet all standards and perform the same duties and functions as full-time firefighters. Staff Reserve personnel can only assist with fire and emergency medical scene activities which are outside the IDLH atmospheres, hot zones, and inner action circle. Staff Reserve Firefighters are not authorized to ride on combat ready vehicles but may be authorized to ride with a Battalion Chief or an EMS Supervisor.
All Reserve firefighters are required to complete an annual average of 24 hours per month of training, administrative, and standby time. Certified Reserves are required to complete 8 hours of monthly ride time which is included as part of the 24 hours of monthly training. This program is only open to applicants residing in Orange, Seminole, Polk, Lake, Volusia, Brevard, and Osceola counties.
