Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart to assist as a crossing guard on first day of school

For Immediate Release

Commissioner Stewart will assist as a crossing guard at Shenandoah Elementary in District 4 to welcome children back to school

Monday morning, August 18 at 8:30 Commissioner Stewart will kick off the school year by assisting as a school crossing guard along with Manuel Hernandez from the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Stewart and Hernandez will be working at the crossing directly in front of Shenandoah.

Orange County Fire Rescue Department would like to offer the following safety tips to all vehicle operators:
-Yellow Flashing lights on the bus indicate that it is preparing to stop and load or unload children. Any persons operating a vehicle over the road or highway, upon approaching a school bus which displays a stop signal, needs to bring such vehicle to a full stop.

-Vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus are always required to come to a complete stop.
-Vehicles moving in the opposite direction as the bus are also required to stop unless there's an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier on a divided highway.
-Never pass a bus on the right side, as children may be boarding or exiting the school bus. This is illegal and most important to remember as it can have tragic results!
