Orange County Firefighters Want You to Be Safe If the Power Goes Out

Orange County Fl.: As emergency officials continue to monitor Tropical Storm Fay, Orange County Firefighters would like to take a moment to remind citizens and visitors how to stay safe during a power outage.

When the power goes out:

• Turn off or unplug all electrical appliances or devices that were on when the power went out.  This will protect your electronics when the power come back and reduces the chance of fire.  Leave one lamp on so you know when the power is back on.
• Do not use candles or camping lanterns indoors.  Children or pets could accidentally knock over these items starting a fire.  Battery powered lights are much safer.  Fuel based camping lanterns also can give off deadly CO gas and should only be used in well ventilated areas.
• Do not use charcoal or gas grills indoors.  Besides being a serious fire hazard, these give off CO gas.  CO, or carbon monoxide, is colorless, odorless and deadly.
• Use extreme caution with generators.  Generators also give off CO gas and should only be used in well ventilated areas.  Do not attach your generator to your home's electrical system unless it has been installed by a professional electrician.
• Limit opening your freezer and refrigerator.  Your food will stay cold longer if the doors to your refrigerator and freezer stay closed.
• Be careful with food.  Refrigerated foods should not be kept at temperatures above 40 degrees F for more than 2 hours.  After that point, it may not be safe to eat.
• Watch out for downed power lines after a storm.  Power lines could be hidden in fallen trees.  Never go near a downed power line and keep children and pets away as well.

As always, in an emergency, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.  If you have any non-emergency questions, contact the Orange County Government info line at 3-1-1.
