Local Firm Accepts Mayor Crotty's Challenge to Go Green

Mayor Crotty and Scott Altman, Orlando Rock cut the ribbon for the new biodiesel equipment.

One week after Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty hosted his successful Climate Change Summit, a local firm announced it is converting all of its heavy equipment to soy based Biodiesel fuel. Orlando Rock is a $20 million site development company that has done business in Orange County since 1984. Their work includes municipal, retail, commercial and industrial projects.

Mayor Crotty has announced aggressive goals to lower Orange County Government's greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by the year 2020. "Government can lead by example," said Mayor Crotty, "but we can't do it alone. It will take the green efforts of more companies such as Orlando Rock to have a significant positive impact on the environment."

For Orlando Rock, this is a sizable commitment of time and resources. The company uses 160,000 gallons of fuel per year to operate its construction equipment. Switching to Biodiesel will simultaneously reduce the company's air pollution and its dependence on fossil fuel. The company has a history of being environmentally conscientious, having pioneered the use of recycled concrete base.
