Performs responsible clerical and bookkeeping duties in preparing and maintaining fiscal and payroll records.This is bookkeeping work requiring independent judgment in the application of established work methods and procedures.
An employee in a position allocated to this classification is responsible for preparing and maintaining account books and ledgers, posting transactions, verifying invoices, and performing routine calculations. Duties may include providing functional guidance to lower-level employees.
Work is performed under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor who reviews work through periodic audits for accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
Representative Duties /Assignments
Prepares and maintains a variety of accounting records including payroll, accounts payable and subsidiary accounts

Compiles accounting data from ledgers for preparation of financial reports and statements.
Operates computer terminal and microcomputer; uses calculator and typewriter.
Receives, audits and verifies invoices from contracting agencies and posts transactions to appropriate accounts.
Reviews and verifies payroll registers and other fiscal documents for accuracy and completeness.
Performs a variety of calculations to reconcile ledgers on a periodic basis.
May provide functional guidance to lower-level employees.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent including or supplemented by courses in bookkeeping or business math; and with three years clerical experience, two years of which must have been in bookkeeping. Vocational or college-level training in bookkeeping or accounting may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Experience using a computer terminal or microcomputer for data entry and retrieval is preferred.
