Statement from Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs | Transfer of Markeith Loyd from ORMC to OCCD

I want to again thank and commend our outstanding law enforcement officers. Their work in apprehending Markeith Loyd brings an enormous comfort to our entire community, but especially to the grieving families. The fact that this suspect is alive and able to answer questions is of significant importance and value to law enforcement, legal authorities as well as the families.

Although previously housed at the Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Loyd was officially transferred to the custody and control of Orange County Corrections at 0150AM this morning (01/18/17); earlier this evening he was transferred to our Orange County Corrections 33rd St. facility. He has initially been charged with First Degree Murder With A Firearm, Unlawful Killing Of An Unborn Child, Attempted First Degree Murder With A Firearm, and 2 counts of Aggravated Assault With A Firearm.

I want people to know that we take the care, custody and control of every inmate that comes into our facility very seriously. Particularly in the case of violent individuals like Markeith Loyd, we have well-established protocols to ensure the safety of our employees and other inmates, as well as our on-site judicial and law enforcement partners, and citizens at large. While in the custody of the Orange County Jail, inmates with relatives, known associates, or accomplices also in custody, are held separately and are not permitted to be in contact with each other.

Please allow this release to serve as confirmation that Markeith Loyd has been transported to the Orange County Jail without incident. He arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m.
