Redistricting Advisory Committee Members

The Orange County Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) is a fifteen member committee of Orange County residents and electors that will review census data to recommend new boundaries for Orange County’s six commission districts to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.

Redistricting Process Basics

The Florida Constitution and the Orange County Charter require the Board of County Commissioners to reconsider and reconfigure the political boundaries for its Commission districts at least once every 10 years to comport with the latest Census figures. A Resolution, adopted by the Board of County Commissioners, created the 2011 Redistricting Advisory Committee to make recommendations as to the configuration of those districts. Each Commissioner nominated two members to the Redistricting Advisory Committee. The Orange County Mayor nominated three additional members for a total number of 15 members on the Committee.

The Charter and the Constitution do not provide a specific time frame within which the Committee must submit its recommendations; however, the Resolution establishing the Redistricting Advisory Committee provides a suggested date of October 1, 2011.  The Committee will rely on a number of factors to create the new districts. Input is anticipated and encouraged from local civic groups and members of the general public at each of the RAC meetings. General media coverage, including rebroadcast of the meetings on Orange TV, is intended to increase awareness and participation in the process. Finally, through the use of this website, members will be able to obtain additional input from the public as to the configuration of the county commission districts.

Members will be encouraged to maintain neighborhoods, subdivisions and other communities of interest in the same districts and to follow other established legal principles. The resulting recommendation will then be considered by the Board of County Commissioners. After at least one public hearing, the Board will either ratify or reject the Committee’s proposal. The final result will be a new series of districts created to accommodate the changes in population throughout our County, and created to insure that all citizens have equal representation in our County government.
